FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

We get it. There are a lot of information. So if we missed a question, send us an email us at contact@thenimbuscompany.com.
1. What weight should I order for my blanket?

Our recommendation for what blanket you should choose based on your body is different from what most companies would recommend. We suggest that you choose a blanket that is 7-9% of your body weight.
The most popular recommendation for weighted blankets is to choose one that is 10% of your body weight. However, we discovered that using a lighter weighted blanket allows your body to adjust to the extra weight faster and you can customize the weight using extra layers.

Through our research, we found that people are often overwhelmed by the weight of the blankets. Often people feel that the weight is too heavy, too constraining, or too hot especially with the added weight of a cover or with extra blankets. For first time users, it takes your body time to adjust to the extra weight so it can also be overwhelming.

Refer to our weight chart for information on what blanket is right for you.

2. Will I overheat under the blanket with all that weight?

Nimbus blankets have several features that keeps your body from overheating. It is made from premium bamboo, which is soft and cool on your skin and it has a remarkable insulating feature that regulates your body temperature.

Unlike the Nimbus blanket, most blankets are made from cotton and are designed to be 10% of your body weight. Cotton is generally less breathable than bamboo so people find it hot to use especially during warmer months. People also overheat when they add the extra weight of a cover or an extra layer to the initial weight of the blanket.

To avoid this issue, the Nimbus blanket is made from premium bamboo and is designed to be less than 10% of your body weight. The bamboo fabric is more breathable to allow for better airflow and it is incredibly cool on your skin. Nimbus blankets are also lighter than most weighted blankets so that you can adjust the weight and heat as desired with a cover or extra layers.

3. Can I share the blanket with my partner at night?

Using a weighted blanket is often a personal therapeutic experience. Therefore, sharing it with someone else who has a different body size and a unique sleeping pattern may hinder your therapeutic experience. However, we do offer sizes that would accommodate two people. We recommend purchasing the blanket according to the partner with less body weight.

4. Can I attach the blanket to my duvet cover?

Our blankets have rings on the edges so you can attach strings to it or loop them around buttons on duvet covers.

5. How do I take care of my blanket?

Here are some tips on caring for your Nimbus blanket:

SPOT CLEAN FIRST

Use a warm soapy cloth to remove any stains on the weighted blanket.

OPT FOR HAND WASHING

Hand washing the blanket will prevent any tearing and is gentler on the fabric.

IF YOU MUST MACHINE WASH, TRY COLD RINSE CYCLE

Machine wash your blanket alone so nothing can get caught on the blanket and cause damage to it. Use the cold rinse cycle instead of a spin cycle.

AIR DRY OR MACHINE DRY ON DELICATE

The best option is to air dry your blanket in the sun or in front of a window. If you are using a dryer, dry on delicate.

USE A COVER FOR EXTRA PROTECTION

With a cover for your weighted blanket, you shouldn’t have to wash your weighted blanket at all. If you have a cover, you will only need to air out the weighted blanket once every three to five months. To air it out, just hang it in mild sunlight for 1-3 hours so it can dry out any body moisture or oils that your blanket may have soaked up.

6. Are Nimbus blankets hypoallergenic or treated with any chemicals before they are shipped?

Our Nimbus blankets are made from bamboo, which means that they are hypoallergenic. The blanket is not treated with any chemicals before they are shipped. However, you should wash your blanket before you use it if you have any special concerns.

7. Can my kids or pets use the weighted blanket?

Weighted blankets are only recommended for users who are able to lift the blanket off of their bodies if needed. Generally, they are not suggested for users under fifty pounds. People with disability and are unable to lift heavy objects should not use the weighted blanket regardless of your weight.

8. What are safety hazards I should know of?
POTENTIAL SUFFOCATION HAZARD

In order to use a weighted blanket, you must have the ability to lift it off of your body. Caregivers of small children, elderly, or individuals with disabilities will need to use discretion as to whether the blanket is safe or not.

POTENTIAL CHOKING HAZARD

Our blankets have glass beads inside that can be a potential choking hazard for small children if the blanket is torn. Therefore, we do not recommend using a damaged blanket around small children.

9. Who would benefit from using a weighted blanket?

Weighted blankets are generally used therapeutically for mental health conditions. However, it can help anyone sleep better. Please ask your therapist if you have a mental health condition before using the blanket. Here is a list of conditions that are commonly relieved with weighted blankets.

  • Anxiety, depression, insomnia
  • Sensory disorders: Weighted blankets decrease external stimulation and help you relax better.

10. If I am claustrophobic, are weighted blankets for me?

Someone part of our team is claustrophobic and tested our blanket out herself. From her experience, we concluded that it is safe for an individual with claustrophobia to use weighted blankets. However, we suggest choosing a lighter weight for the blanket. You should consult with a therapist before using the blanket.
